Ca' d'Oro apartment is located in Cannaregio, Venice's second largest sestiere, stretching across the north-west of the city from the station almost to the Rialto bridge.
Probably the name "Cannaregio" comes from the contraction of "Canale Regio" name of that wide branch of canal that connecting the Grand Canal with the north area of the lagoon. Many scholars instead reckon that this area once was called Cannarecium because of all the canes that were in that area.
Cannaregio "sestiere" (neighbourhood) is one of the wider and it is on the left bank of the Grand Canal between the railway station and Rialto bridge; it faces north, to the mainland so it had a lively development of new productive and living areas when the Venetian Republic annexed the domain known as "da terra" (from the land) in addiction of the domain known as "da mar" (from the sea) that was conquered many centuries earlier. |
