The History of Marco Polo: In the 13th century Venice was one of the richiest and most powerful cities in the Mediterranean.There were sold the objects and stuffs from all parts of the world (silk, ceramics, jewels, parfumes, medicines, spicies and other de luxe objects). Marco Polo was born in Venice in 1253.Together with his father and uncle he set off from Venice and went exploring the East. In the 13th century there were two ways to reach the East.The first was by land: across Turkey, Persia and the Goby Desert you reached to Cina. |
 The other was by sea: across the Suez Canal, the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean you reach Ceylon, India and the Spicies Islands. These lands were dominated by “Mongolians” original from the North China. They were ruled by skilled and courageous heads called Khans.They rapidly conquested the vast territory of the East. The Mongolians Emperors were friendly towards the Europeans. |
 Marco Polo entered the service of Kublai Khan, one of the most powerful Mongolian Emperors.This was great opportunity for Marco Polo. Accomplishing diplomatic and administrative missions for Kublai Khan he had the possibility to travel and study the geography and economy of these lands. He also had the possibility to observe and study habits and customs of local population. |
 Having returned to Italy, Marco Polo was captured during the Curzola's Battle by the Genoeses. During his reclusion he narrated his adventures to Rustichello da Pisa, his fellow prisoner. Rustichello da Pisa wrote these recordings in French. Later, they were translated on numerous other languages and diffused all around the world with the title “Il Milione”. |
