Hotel Sturion is first heard of towards the end of the 13th century, where above the arch at Calle dello Sturion and overlooking the Grand Canal was the House with the same name which the Doge of Venice had specifically built to suit the comfort of foreign merchants taking their goods to the Market of Rialto |
Refurbished in the 14th century, the hotel reached the peak of its renown in the 15th century when celebrated navigators and traders and even seven Ambassadors from Friuli were among its guests. In 1494, Vittore Carpaccio in his painting "The Miracle of the Cross", which can be seen at the Academy. |
The inn was continually mentioned in a variety of historical texts through the end of the 18th century. It then became the private home of a wealthy Venetian family. In the 1950s, the inn resurfaced in the same place and with the same foundations that had seen seven hundred years of the "Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia"'s history. |
