If you decide you want to take a break from the city's cultural attractions, one vaporetto stop in the other direction will take you to the Island of the Lido with its golden beaches, and where every September the Venice Film Festival is held. And if you are interested in visiting the islands of the lagoon (Murano is famous for its glassmaking, Burano for its lace, and Torcello was the first settlement in the Venetian lagoon), from the "Arsenale" vaporetto stop it is just a 25 minute boat ride to Murano. Or, foregoing public transportation, a fascinating itinerary through the "really Venetian" Venice will bring you in just a few minutes to Campo San Polo (one of the most beautiful squares in Venice, which also hosts the Carnival in winter and the Film Festival in summer), the stupendous Gothic church of the Frari, the San Rocco school, and the San Giovanni Evangelista big school. |
